_Rescue yourself from passionless work by integrating what you love about life with what you do for a living.
Meet ImageCube client Marie; she works in finance where she has been successful for some time, yet in spite of her success she was missing a connection between who she was internally, and what she did for a living. Her true passions were art, pottery, and fine wine. She studied how wine was grown, cultivated, and mastered and had even taken classes on how wine can be an investment opportunity. Every morning, when she looked in her closet she saw a sea of grey, black, and various shades of tan and she felt underwhelmed as she got dressed. Her image wasn't expressing who she was in an authentic way, yet because of her professional role in a banking environment she felt trapped by the dress code that defined her career.

Picture
_Working with Marie allowed us to reveal that the disconnect she was feeling was a real and growing threat to her long-term prosperity. It turned out her Myers-Briggs personality type was ENFP, which describes a person that is Extroverted I'N'ntuitive Feeling and Perceiving. ENFPs have the ability to inspire and motivate others, ironically these personality traits aren't often associated with finance. Marie and other ENFPs thrive on high-energy in life, color in fashion, and have a strong need for aesthetic stimulation. The kind of excitement that was missing from her closet was also missing from her successful career. After working together we found a creative way for Marie to integrate her passion for fine wine, with the work she does for her financial clients. In the past Marie had done what most professionals do for their clients: held quarterly workshops in her branch office to share investment advice. After considering how Marie wanted to look and feel, we created a strategy for 2012 that would combine Marie's personal passions with her wealth of knowledge in the financial industry. Instead of holding another workshop in her branch office, Marie would host unique wine tasting events with financial advice added throughout each gathering. Now, several years ago she had purchased an exciting and stylish crimson-red Bolero jacket while traveling in Spain... that she had never worn. For Marie the combination of what she loved in life, and what she did for a living created an opportunity for her to finally wear that stylish crimson-red bolero jacket and deepen her relationship with her clients while differentiating herself professionally. Sharing knowledge and insights about wine and finance, while wearing her favorite red jacket, Marie found herself enjoying her clients and her work more.

_Marie's enjoyment was precisely because she was experiencing harmony between what she did for a living, and who she was as a person. This is what it means to be more YOU in 2012. Find ways to create harmony across your personal and professional environments. This is just one example of how ImageCube helps professionals share their best image and raise their level of authentic communication with clients and peers at the same time. The result of our collaboration has meant that Marie enjoys getting dressed every morning, and looking and feeling her very best has never been easier.

_ If you're ready to look and feel great in all aspects of your life, like Marie, connect with ImageCube today. We wish you all the best and a very Happy New Year!

The holidays are about people coming together to celebrate and relax. When you go to your office party (yes, go), use this guide to positively affect your image, and in turn your career.
_ What you do is not in fact who you are, and yet throughout the year it can be hard to share insights about yourself with your peers as you complete tasks vital to your organization. This is why an office holiday party is such an excellent opportunity to express more of your personality. Whether you get to discover that you share a love of kayaking with a coworker, or that the leader of your group went to the same university, it's important for everyone to be known for who they are, along with the great results they deliver 'on the job'. If you don't show up (Tip #1) you'll miss several opportunities to make a strong positive impression upon those with whom you work. Missing this opportunity can often translate to additional missed opportunities in the future, because promotions and camaraderie go together, which is why you must go to your holiday party. {Download all six (6) Party Smart Holiday Tips now!}

Picture
_Once you've arrive at the party, plan to be beverage savvy (Tip #2) to ensure your image maintains its luster from the moment to you arrive to the moment you say goodnight. Demonstrating self-control and self-awareness invites those who are paying attention, and someone is paying attention, to trust your judgment in other areas. As you mix and mingle with other party-goers, be an ally, not just a guest (Tip #3); make an effort to learn about others and discover what matters to them to find out how you can help. After all, you'll see one another again at the office, so take time to get beyond their job description and learn what they want to achieve.

_
Offering an authentic level of interest in others is a powerful way to make every conversation engaging. While you're meeting people and having great conversation it can be tough to capture everyone's name, which is why it's important to use a person's name at least three times in the first few minutes (Tip #4). It always feels good to be remembered and it reflects positively on you when you can quickly recall a name as you step into the elevator on Monday. You can't force rapport, but you can build it over time and using someone's name is a great place to start. Whether you arrive with a guest or simply meet someone who is unattended by the person who brought them, it's critical to be a considerate host (Tip #5) at all times.
_
As a member of the organization, showing care for people and concern for the office, as if it were your home tells people you take ownership for the things in which you're involved, and expresses a magnanimous quality. As you move about the party and make your way to and from conversations, it's important to feel confident. This is made easier by dressing in a way that is matched to the environment, the guests, and the personal goals you have in mind. This means that expressing your personality should empower you, not undermine you (Tip #6). Adding color, texture, and interesting patterns are all great ways to express yourself in a mature and appropriate manner, without making the mistake of appearing too casual, or too provocative in your appearance.

Making the most of an exciting holiday gathering is an ideal way to boost your image and make a few allies along the way. Get all the details! Download your copy of ImageCube's Party Smart Holiday Tips!

Some men face many challenges as they seek to express more personality through their clothing. We'll look at real solutions that can give you the edge without going too far at work, or afterwards.
_The Challenge: Expressing Yourself While Remaining Professional
I've met several professional men over the years who are just as challenged as women with expressing their personality while also 'looking the part' in their career. Whether they are a CEO, an attorney, or a civic leader the uniform look and feel of a suit tends to be rather plain. The simplicity of mens style isn't a negative, in fact it's what makes several elements of mens fashion timeless and useful year over year. At the same time it can be tough to find a look that communicates personality and a unique personal image, while also commanding a necessary level of respect among clients and coworkers. During a recent segment of IndyStyle on WISH-TV8 we looked at two ways a traditional suit can be updated to express more personality, while still relying on the familiarity of the traditional suit. From left to right in the image above; one look offers an edge with a high-profile jacket, another takes a welcoming approach with a monochromatic earth tone, and the last one amplifies the importance of color through a brighter shirt and tie combination.
_The Solution: You Have Several Options
For you or the men in your life, it can seem that there aren't enough options for men to look fresh and modern without risking an unprofessional appearance. This is where things get interesting because each look we've shown is going to be aligned with different lifestyles, personalities, and overall goals.
Clothing shown is from www.catouwear.com.

Picture
_The Bordeaux Jacket:
The first look, paired with tailored jeans and an exciting pair of saddle-brown leather boots, is youthful, edgy, and casually tailored. The bordeaux jacket is what changes the overall look from jeans and boots to a more polished look with an attention getting silhouette. The best part about this look is that for men who want to add more style, but don't want to look too casual, a blazer in an energizing color and textured corduroy is a great option. Whether this were paired with black boots or a pair of brown or cap-toe shoes is up to the individual. The blazer offers the structure needed to balance the casual nature of jeans and boots in a way that says, "I know what I'm doing" in a smooth and confident manner.

Picture
_One Color Please:
A Safari inspired suit is more welcoming for several reasons, from its lean lines, single-button closure, to the flap pocket on upper left, shorter lapel, repetitious nature of buttons - four buttons instead of 2 or 3, paired with vest gives a bit more formality to a relaxed. This is amplified by the wider but shorter lapels which rest on the shoulders like a loose dress shirt collar. Add to this the matching vest and you have a lot of visual interest, which is precisely why the uniform color presents a win-win for the wearer. With a lot of visual elements, diagonal pockets, stitched details that are noticeable but not overwhelming taking place, reducing the color to one, plus a pale shirt allows anyone who is looking at the wearer to see the style of the garment, without being overwhelmed. This is an excellent option for a man who wants more exciting clothes, but can't risk looking over-done or too outlandish. With a monochromatic suit like this, the interest is on the features and tailoring as a whole, which keeps the overall look calm enough for most offices, and edgy enough for dinner with friends after work.

Picture
_Focus on the Basics:
The importance of a tie and dress shirt cannot be overstated. By choosing colors wisely you can do more than just look sharp, you'll also bring attention to your face, where you use eye contact and non-verbal communication skills to stay connected. Often this combination is given too little attention, by grabbing a clean white shirt and a tie that matches the suit, men miss out on a key styling opportunity. For a man who can't afford to look edgy at work, or simply wants to be more traditional the three things that matter most are: the fit of the suit or blazer, the color of the shirt, and the color of the tie. By choosing shirt and tie combinations that are compatible with your skin tone it's easy for others to focus on you in conversation and in general. The color of a tie is an opportunity to bring out the color of your hair, eyes, or skin tone as well. By making this a priority, along with a well-tailored suit or blazer, you offer a cohesive and engaging appearance, while still managing to "look the part" for the roles and responsibilities you fulfill in your career, and in your personal life.

Quick & Easy Image Tips!
  1. Avoid combining more than three patterns in one outfit for business.
  2. Do not mix high-quality clothing with tattered or worn styles, it sends a confusing message.
  3. If your goal is to be perceived as likeable, use brighter colors. If you wish to be viewed as wise use darker colors.

It was a milestone celebration and another powerful series of fashionable events that gave back and invited everyone to look and feel good!

MFW Kick-off! Home and Fashion Fusion on October 19th, 2011 Photos!
Midwest Fashion Week celebrated 5 years of inclusive fashion and community support, so it was time to celebrate! Since Berny Martin made the bold move to start MFW in October 2007 the organization has come a long way. Peeople joined MFW for a look back, a look ahead, and to pay tribute to our supporters, community partners, and sponsors. We also featured a gallery of artwork from local home fashion artists. A portion of the proceeds from this event were committed to benefit the SOHO organization.

Empowerment Revealed on October 20th, 2011 Photos!
You met Sandy Hogan in our last newsletter, she was the star of a powerful and moving fashion show. After six months of personal training boot camp, image consulting, life coaching, facial treatments, and air-brush tanning, the ImageCube Naturally You Makeover winner, Sandy Hogan was revealed. This occasion highlighted the importance recharging and finding "me" time in our busy lives. Guests enjoyed offerings from an array of vendors to re-energize and indulge the senses, along with great gift bags. A fashion show including designs from local boutiques, designers, and tenants of the Fashion Mall at Keystone took place and a portion of the proceeds were committed to benefit the I.W.I.N. Foundation of Indiana and their breast cancer programs.

Taste of Fashion at Sensu on October 21st, 2011 Photos!
If you were there you know how exciting it was. Sensu is Indy's most exciting new place to see, and be seen. At Sensu we featured an Asian-fusion prix fixe MFW menu that was sure to ignite the senses of every attendee. The fashion show amplified the creativity of the designers while capturing the energy and brilliance of an atmosphere only Sensu could offer. The fashion show the fun continued with sleek cocktails, fine wines, and exquisite sakes; guests mingled in the dining area overlooking the dance floor, or sauntered down to the nightclub to officially arrive at the party. A portion of proceeds from this event were committed to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Fashion is Empowerment on October 22nd, 2011 Photos!
"Fashion is Empowerment" referred to MFW's core value of utilizing fashion to highlight different philanthropic interests. Each year MFW empowers artists, stylists, and fashion designers to grow their career while also positively impacting the Indiana economy and the economies of many surrounding states. In Spring 2011, MFW helped Down Syndrome Indiana raise more than $70,000 and featured the works of more than 20 designers! The grand finale was a show for Fall 2011 that benefitted the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, including an exclusive VIP party featuring DJ Gabby Love and specialty cocktails from Smirnoff Vodka. The runway came alive with fashion featuring the Spring/Summer 2012 collections of six designers representing Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, and South Africa. After the show, light up the night with a dance-powered after party at the Murat Theater as rival DJ's go head to head to get you moving the sounds of the latest beats.

Sandy Hogan says, "I have confidence now when dressing and going out."
The work I do with clients is driven by a strong desire to help people express their authentic self through the textures, colors, shapes, and styles that make clothing a powerful tool for living a more confident life. Sandy's story is an inspiring example of how image can transform how we feel and the way we live each day. Why were we so successful? We took time to listen and to understand Sandy's personality using an objective process. We used clothing, hair, and make-up to announce who Sandy is while staying true to what makes her feel comfortable. We listened intently as she defined the “problem” - for Sandy it was looking “pulled-together” so we developed a system that would allow her to look pulled together, pretty, and feminine. Learn more about the process on this extended IndyStyle segment. As the winner of the ImageCube Naturally You Makeover contest Sandy rediscovered her personal power and refreshed her image by working with ImageCube.

About Sandy In Her Own Words
"I am a follower of Jesus, wife of 37 years, mother of two, grandmother of 11. I am the caregiver of my mother in law who lives next door and work from home as a medical transcriptionist. I also serve behind the scenes at my church, College Park. I am happy when I am serving and helping others. I love watching my grandchildren and being a big part of their lives. Every Sunday, I make dinner after church for the whole family. I like quiet nights at home, a good cup of coffee, a challenging game of Scrabble, munching on vegetables, and spending time in my garden. Back in May, my mother passed away. We were very close, and she had lived next door. Her health had been stable but we were still in and out of doctor's offices weekly. It was my way of life for quite some time, and I still miss her very much. Also this summer, I was bitten by a spider that caused a pretty bad infection, landing me in the hospital overnight. It took almost two weeks to recover from that. On the positive side, my 11th grandchild was born!
God is good and always sees me through."

  1. What was your initial reaction when you won the makeover?
"I received a phone call the same day that my mother, who I've been caring for many years, passed away. In my surprise and deep grief, I received the phone call saying I had won a make-over that I didn't even know my daughter nominated me for! I was shocked. She was at my house, so I called her into the room - we couldn't control our laughter through our tears. It seemed absurd and wonderful at the same time."
  2. What were you most excited about with the makeover?
    "I was most excited about the wardrobe and hair help, as well as make-up;
areas I'm not very strong in."
  3. How has the makeover empowered you?
"I have never been good at putting outfits together and knowing what looks good on me. I don't buy anything because with all the choices, I can't decide, so I get nothing at all. Sola has empowered me to find my own personal style that flatters me yet fits my lifestyle. I have confidence now when dressing and going out."

What have you learned from ImageCube?
"Sola has been wonderful. The book she put together about me has been great and the software program that shows me my best look is fantastic. It was a little embarrassing for her to go through my closet, but hey, it needed to be done. There isn’t a lot in there and I am looking forward to getting things that will help me to dress the way I think is flattering to me. I was very insecure about putting outfits together because I was never sure what matched - Sola has helped me to start to figure that out." "I think the whole concept of focusing on my well being is great. So often, we lose sight of the need to make sure we are taken care of. This has helped me to think about myself and make sure I take care of me along with everything else going on."

It can be said that few people wake up looking like a supermodel, after all we're only human. While we may not start the day looking our best, most of us want to walk out the door ready to take on the world and share our very best image to those we meet throughout the day. What we know about psychology, human interaction, and the power of first impressions gives us ample reason to take extra time to make sure who we present, is exactly who we want people to see.
Picture
What Do You Want To Convey with Your Image?
This is the central question in the work I do with clients and corporations; the answers I receive help me choose the experts, tools, and ideas we will employ to craft an image that is compelling, attractive, and most of all, authentically you. There is little value in getting a flashy makeover if the result causes you to feel inauthentic or uncomfortable. This is why through ImageCube I work to ensure results are in alignment with your personal and professional goals.

Kate: From Girl-Next-Door to High-Fashion
Working with Kate Herrod of LModelz was a lot of fun; having modeled for several years, she was ready to take her look, and her career to another level. When I asked her what she wanted her image to express, she wanted to step away from the casual appearance she had and move towards an edgier, more high-fashion image. Josh Agan of the J. Agan Salons was able to provide a style that was edgy, without being severe. We took into consideration her personal and professional goals, while also determining how to best frame her heart-shaped face. Once her hair was set, we worked with makeup artists Kathi Lyons & Sara Murff of My Mobile Makeup to highlight her eyes and provide a fresh, youthful look. The result was excellent; we retained the authentic charm that comes naturally to Kate, while also updating her image in a way she can easily maintain and manage.

Picture
I Love What I Do
Image has to work for who you are and what you want to achieve in your life. Before taking Kate to a salon we focused on crafting a visual message that is true to who she is and what she wants. This is the best part about image consulting, and it's what I love about my business - I get to help people like Kate harness the power of their image without losing an ounce of who they are on the inside. She remains approachable and likable, which she is, yet now her image is better matched to her career goals as they relate to the world of high-fashion modeling. I know Kate will go far in her career, now it may be that much easier for her to gain the exposure she desires and people will take her seriously.

When people meet you, the first thing they see is your face, which is why the shape of your face is something you should consider when seeking to make the best first impression. Whether you've been wearing your hair long or short, have added makeup or if you're a guy who's changed how you trim your beard, everything about your face presents a strong image about who you are.
Picture
Know Your Face Shape
There are many face shapes and various bone structures, however we can generally focus on the following face shapes as we seek to design the best look for your features. (1) From your hairstyle and makeup to eyewear and facial hair, your face says a lot about you. When you think about image, it can seem as though you don't have a lot of control over the shape of your face. In reality you have total control, consider the way famous people have changed and evolved their look throughout their careers. They still have the same face shape, but they certainly don't have the same hairstyle, makeup, or accessories.

Picture

"Why do fashions in clothes change? Because, really, we ourselves change, in the slow metamorphosis to time."
- D.H. Lawrence, 20th century English novelist.

Is your image in sync with who you are... today?
This is the question you should be asking yourself right now. Take a moment and think about the image you project and take note of how closely it reflects who you are, at this moment in your life. Whether you have gained or lost weight, started a new career or ended an old one, you and all the elements of your life are changing. Understanding this is what makes connecting your outward expression with your inner sense of self easy to do.

The D.H. Lawrence quote sums up the big question that is often asked about fashion, trends, style, and image. While it  may seem obvious, it's an answer hidden in plane sight. What makes changes in clothing necessary are the people who wear them... and in what time they wear them. It's clear that few of us would try to put on a garment from our teenage years, even if it did feel nostalgic or fit somewhat well, it belongs to a different part of our lives. So it is with the latest trends in fashion and accessories. The goal is not to rush out to buy "all the latest clothes" without a second thought - that would only create a costly cycle of wardrobe updates. The focus must be on identifying colors, textures, styles, and patterns that connect with who you are today.

Picture
Now he wears purple.
  • A friend of mine in his early thirties recently shared that over the last year or so, he's started to wear a lot of purple. What makes him laugh is that he recalls a time when he would never have worn anything purple... not one thing! Now, he says he has six or more shirts in various shades of lavender, dark purple, and other interpretations of this royal hue. So what changed? It wasn't fashion magazines or pop-culture, it was an internal change in who he was that led to an outside expression of color. The color matched a change in how he saw himself, and wearing it fulfilled an internal desire to express  who he is today, which is why now, he wears purple.

Fall/Winter 2012 Trends (VIDEO SNEAK-PEEK)
This week at Macy's at Castleton people will be gathering to talk about, see, touch and experience the latest trends artists have created to help us express ourselves in new ways. While it's easy to get drawn into the excitement, after all fashion is a lot of fun - the bigger goal is to seek out colors, textures, patterns and fabrics that inspire you to feel great. Fashion does not make us who we are, it simply allows us to express who we are in new and compelling ways. Before that interview, important meeting or outing with friends or colleagues, make sure the image others see is the most accurate reflection of who you are, today. Doing so will help you communicate authenticity and confidence at all times, guaranteed.

You may or may not know that Fashion Week-events where the fashion mavens showcase what’s “in” and what’s “out” for the upcoming season-occurs twice per year. The rapid pace of changes in fashion trends, styles, and 'hot' items can be a challenge for an organization to manage, which is just one reason why dress codes can be tough to enforce. While Fall/Winter 2011/2012 brings slim suits for men and the 60's influences to tailoring - the perennial suit, plus a smart vest are still safe for just about any office. For women, the trends are much less consistent and can present challenges for leaders and managers.

How big a challenge depends on the organization.
Picture
What? I'm just being stylish.
  • For several years I was a manager at an insurance company that provided insurance for employment labor lawsuits. Meeting customers and reviewing their claims gave me an inside look at the cost to an organization who reprimands, or even dismisses an employee due in part to their attire. While organizations want to rely on a broad dress code to avoid risk, different interpretations of the same policy can in fact increase risk to the whole company in the form of costly litigation. I remember a case where an employee filed suit against a former employer because she was allegedly told, regarding a blouse worn by her and another woman, “she can wear that blouse because it looks better on her”. The blouses were the same, the people were different, and the result was an employment labor lawsuit.

Personal opinion and a lack of clarity on appropriateness set the stage for a poorly worded comment which led to charges of discrimination. This is just one example that illustrates why managers and leaders simply must be aware of fashion trends; the reality is people’s choices in garments (when there’s no clearly dictated uniform) or what they choose to wear is influence by television, movies, culture, music, fashion magazines, friends, etc-the list of influencers is a moving target.
  • In our last newsletter I said, "Fashion is about what people are wearing in general. Image is about what you are wearing on purpose." When leading or managing others you have to be aware of the trends in New York, before they show up in your office-because the latest trends will show up in your office. The Fall/Winter 2012 fashion season has a lot of great styles, yet the appropriateness of some trends is questionable for a corporate environment. Here's a breakdown of a few trends to prepare for as you ensure your dress code is enforceable and relevant.
Fall/Winter 2012 Trends (VIDEO SNEAK-PEEK)
    1.    Fur: Fur, fur, and more fur on shoes, bags, dresses, and sweaters.
    2.    Leather: As a trim, accent, or total look.
    3.    Bold Gold: It’s flashy, large, and makes a statement.
    4.    Shimmer: Sequins, glitter, lurex, and lame-all are light-catchers.
    5.    Animal Prints: A total look, head to toe or prints on shoes, skirts, or purses.

Risks & Rewards
The trends listed above offer a snap-shot of what women will see in stores very soon, and some of it will make it to your office. Even if you have a mild dress code, and don't want to make it overly-complicated it is wise to plan ahead. Consider what will be said when a staff member arrives in a sequined dress with fur trimming. She’s probably just trying to be stylish. But if the shimmer and glitz are distracting from the business at hand what will you say? One reward for being up to date on fashion trends is that mangers and leaders can review in advance what will be acceptable for their workplace environment. Another benefit is showing added value to the organization - whether you're in HR or another role, by minimizing circumstances of serious disconnect between clients and the employee.
